The method 教法

Five steps. The first one is reading.

A chart-based method, taught in the order a working drummer actually learns: read, play, write, vary, perform. Every student moves through the same five steps, at their own pace, and every one of them ends up able to read music.

Week 01

Read the chart

Every student starts with a real chart — Backbeat Highway. The first session is reading, not playing. By the end you can point at any symbol and say what it means.

Week 02

Play the chart 打譜

The chart becomes music. We count in together, play through, then play it again at full tempo. By the end of week two you have played your first song.

Week 03

Write the chart

Measures 33–64 are blank. You write your own part. This is the first real test: did you read the chart, or did you memorise a pattern? The blanks reveal it.

Month 02

The three feels 三種 feel

Basic rock, basic funk, basic ballad. Same chart form, different vocabulary. You hear how the same three voices make a different song.

Month 03

The first performance

A 60-second play-through, recorded. You take it home, listen to it, decide what you want to fix, and come back next week with a question.

The long answer

Why charts

A child who can read a drum chart is a child who can play with other musicians. A child who can read a chart does not need a teacher for every new song — they can teach themselves. A child who can read a chart can sit in on a rehearsal at school, or at church, or at a community centre, and contribute.

The chart is the difference between a child who plays the drums and a child who is a drummer.

Most chain music schools in Taiwan do not use charts. They use ear training and rote learning. That is the cheap way to teach — it scales, but it plateaus. A child who has taken lessons for two years and cannot read a single chart is a child whose teacher failed them.

I teach with charts because that is the standard a working drummer holds. Working drummers read charts. We read them at sound check, in the studio, on the bandstand. If I can read a chart, my students can read a chart. If they can read a chart, they can play with anyone. If they can play with anyone, they will never be bored.

That is also why the chart library on this site is free. It is not a lead-generation trick. It is the first five minutes of the lesson, given away, so that a parent can see what their child is about to learn before they have paid anybody anything.

What a lesson feels like 一堂課的樣子

Forty-five minutes, and you know exactly what to practise.

Every lesson ends with something written down. A student who leaves without knowing what to do for the next seven days will not come back.

01 — WARM UP

Ten minutes on the pad

Single-stroke roll, then the pattern you are working on. Slow before fast, always.

02 — THE CHART

Twenty-five minutes on the chart

We read it, we play it, we play it again. Then we write the blank section together.

03 — THE PLAN

Ten minutes writing it down

I write your practice plan. You take it home. That is the lesson, and it is why the students improve.
